A semiglobal binarization method for embedded environments

A binarization method of grayscale documents for a microcontroller/Field Programmable Gate Array environment is presented. The limitation imposed on the method is that the high time complexity image processing has to be done using in a low-level language for an FPGA chip, and the part has to be algorithmically very simple. The more algorithmically complex parts of the algorithm should have a Iow time complexity, as they would be executed not on the FPGA, but on the relatively slow microcontroller. The method is called semiglobal because it computes two global binarization thresholds, which are then, though, adapted in a simple way for each binarized pixel.
